The Productive Acres Report is a report template within Surety® and Surety® Pro that uses NDVI data to help determine how many acres are productive within a field boundary. This report brings together a number of datasets to help understand how rainfall, topography, and soil types can affect crop productivity. The report offers a breakdown of production by crop type, year, the option to exclude certain outlier data, analyzation tools to compare data against topography, soils, and NAIP Imagery.

Limitations:
There are a few limitations when using the NDVI information that may affect the productive acreage calculation.
  • Clouds and Shadows
    • Create very low NDVI values. Use the "Cloud Check" link to exclude partially cloudy/shadowy images that may affect productive acres calculation.
  • Low NDVI values
    • Overall low values can make it difficult to determine if it was due to low vegetation or lack of good images during high vegetation.
  • Tillable Acres
    • For best results make sure the boundary only uses tillable acres and is the same crop for each year.

How to create and use the Productive Acres Report

Generate a Productive Acre report by selecting or drawing your field boundary and picking the Productive Acres option from the Map/Forms list.

    Image

Once the report loads, there will be a map and data listed out for each year back to 2017.

    Image

    Each year will state:
    1. The calculated productive acres number
    2. The percentage of the boundary acres the productive acres makes up
    3. The range of NDVI values used to produce the productive acres number.
    • The top value of the range is the highest NDVI value present, the lower value of the range is determined by taking the top NDVI value, subtracting 2%, and then subtracting 10 from that.

    Image

An entire year can be excluded from the overall Average Productive Acres calculation by checking the "Exclude" checkbox. An entire year might be excluded because all of the imagery within that year had atmospheric interference such as clouds or cloud shadows.

    Assign Crop Types

If the Crop type of the most recent year is known, it can be assigned by clicking on the Crop box and then selecting the type from the drop down list.

    Image

Any of the other year's crops can be overridden by clicking on the crop box as well.

    Image

    Cloud Check

Imagery that contain cloud interference should be excluded for a more accurate productive acres value. Click on the Cloud Check link to determine and exclude dates within the year's calculation that are affected by clouds.

    Image

Initially the dates that appear will only list and include the dates that contain a percentage of the used max NDVI pixels.

    Image

    Imagery Date options:

    1. The crop year can be changed using the year dropdown.
    2. Filter to just one date by using the date and NDVI % dropdown.
    3. List all dates captured by checking the "Show All Dates" option.

    Image

To get the most accurate Productive Acres number, exclude the image dates (by removing the "Include" check) containing clouds or cloud shadows that overlap with the field area, causing inaccurate NDVI values.

    Image

Once the Cloud Check is complete and exclusions have been made, close the pop up to see the changes reflected on the main report. If the cloud check has been opened, asterisks will appear to indicate that the data has been seen. Note that this does not mean any dates have been excluded.

    Analyze

Analyze provides quick links to other datasets within Surety®/Surety® Pro that may provide more insight regarding the NDVI data for that year.

    Image

The data reports within the Analyze page include:
    • A link to the Cloud Check page.
    • FSA Map with imagery from the selected year. Not Available every year.
    • Crop Map that breaks down the vegetation types within the boundary.
    • Contours on NDVI which shows topo contours overlaid on the NDVI data.
    • Soil Map on NDVI which shows soil types overlaid on the NDVI data.

Use the Analyze reports to help determine reasons for low NDVI values such as hilly or low areas, nonproductive soils, or natural obstructions.

    Image

    Average Productive Acres Grid

The Average Productive Acres grid will display the result based on the inclusions and exclusions made and the Crop type selected. The number in parenthesis behind the crop name indicates the number of years the crop was grown on this field.

    Image

When a Crop is selected, the individual year maps will filter and only show those crop years containing the selected Crop.

    Image

    Data Save

Any changes that are made to this report will save to the specific field boundary. If this same boundary is selected and a Productive Acres report is created in the future, the selected crops, the cloud check inclusions, and Crop Year exclusions will be remembered.
