In Surety, the SRPG or Soil Rating for Plant Growth Data is only available in Nebraska.

As of October 2014, The Nebraska SRPG is no longer supported or updated. The NRCS is recommending the use of the NCCPI. Surety Soil Maps will still include the SRPG data as a historical reference only. (D. Shurtliff- NRCS NE Soil Scientist,Personal Email Communication, July 2 2014)

"SRPG is a rating system that was used to group around 25 soil properties into a soil productivity or soil productivity index calculated for components of STATSGO map units. The SRPG calculations follow the Storie Index Soil Rating which on soil characteristics that govern the land's potential production. While the Storie index considers the characteristics that influenced effective rooting depth and the quality of the root zone, subsurface properties and landscape properties such as slope, micro-relief, and the degree of erosion, the SRPG also considers soil climate regimes as another factor in producing the index. This is a large variable considering the wide range of climates across the Northern Plains Region. The SRPG tables were developed by the Iowa State University Statistical Laboratory." (W. The SRPG was combined with the USGS Land Use and Land Cover (LUDA) to find croplands with the same agronomic behavior or Soil Productivity.

Ranges:

  • 0-30 are considered unsustainable for agronomic crop production. These areas still support productive range ecosystems.
  • 31-50 are considered marginally suitable for crop production.
  • 70 + are considered the most productive soil areas.

The SRPG classes are grouped in the basis of per 10 units. (i.e. 1-10, 10-20, ect.) (W. Waltman, Sinclair, & S. Waltman)

"The assumption of the SRPG is that the soils with the greatest "effective rooting depth" and root zone available water-holding capacity are the most productive." (W. Waltman, Sinclair, & S. Waltman)
