What is a Zip file?

In short, a zipped file is a file that has been compressed to a smaller size. For the purposes of Surety and Surety Pro, a Zip file would be applicable if you have multiple log or shape files that are a zip file. You can upload these into Surety Pro. Additionally, if a soils report is more than one page long, Surety and Surety Pro will automatically create a zip file for you when you save it as a JPEG.

You can compress a file(s) by zipping them up. A zipped file is basically making the file size smaller than the original file. A zipped file will have a .zip file extension.

The types of files that can be reduced in size the most are text oriented file types such as .doc, .docx, .xls and .txt that are made up of solely text in the file. If images are added then the file will not be compressed as much.

Some of the advantages of a zipped files are:

You can save space on your hard drive
The transmission time is greatly reduced with a zipped file
You can encrypt files to protect data with many of the zip utilities
